Latisse is an effective medicine which contains a prostaglandin analogue, bimatoprost. It is an FDA approved medicine for the treatment of hypotrichosis (inadequate eyelashes). The medicine improves the thickness, density and length of the eyelashes. This medicine not only improves cosmetic appearance of the eyelashes but also increases the outflow of intraocular fluid in the eye, thus used for the treatment of glaucoma.

Mechanism of action:

Bimatoprost is a synthetic agent which is similar in structure to a prostaglandin known as prostamide. It depresses the pressure in eyes known as intraocular pressure (IOP) of humans. The higher the level of IOP, the greater is the chances of the optic nerve (eye nerve) damage and loss of vision. Bimatoprost lowers intraocular pressure (IOP) in humans by enhancing the discharge of aqueous humor (fluid in the eyes) through eyes. Bimatoprost works similar to prostaglandin in reduction of the pressure in the eyes. Prostaglandins are chemicals agents which are responsible for performing many functions in the body. In the eye, they increase the flow of the aqueous humour out of the eye. Bimatoprost enhance the flow of aqueous humour and decrease the production of aqueous humour in the eye. Both these actions lower down the pressure in the eye.
