Description

Latim eye drops are used to reduce the intraocular pressure in the eyes. It consists of two active ingredients-Latanoprost and Timolol maleate. These are both medicines that decrease raised pressure within the eye known as intraocular pressure. Both of these ingredients work in different ways to produce a combined effect which is greater than either medicine individually. This medicine should be used following the instructions of doctor.

How does it work?

Latanoprost is a prostaglandin analogue which decreases the pressure in the eye by imitating the action of a naturally-occurring prostaglandin. Prostaglandins acts in the eyes by increasing the drainage of the aqueous humour out of the eye. Latanoprost is synthetic prostaglandin acting on the same receptors in the eye as the natural prostaglandins. Thus by causing an increase in the drainage of aqueous humour out of the eyes, Latanoprost decreases the pressure within the eye.

Timolol is a beta-blocker which acts on various beta-receptors in different parts of the body. Blocking of the beta receptors located in the eye results in the reduction of the amount of aqueous humour that is produced in the eyes. Timolol therefore reduces the inflow of aqueous humour into the eyes and thus drops the pressure within the eyes.

The combination of these two medicines is used to effectively lower the pressure in the eye in the conditions where a beta-blocker or a prostaglandin analogue eye drop does not succeed to lower the pressure enough on its own.
