Human eye is the very vital organ of the body as it is the sense organ. Eyes express communication without words. But sometimes there occur infections in eye that need to be treated well.  Infection in eyes is very common with conjunctivitis. Eyes got inflamed and gritty in conjunctivitis. The white portion appears red and eye lids becomes swollen and stuck together with discharge.

Ofloxacin eye drops are used in treatment of bacterial eye infections that are associated with conjunctivities (pink eye) and corneal ulcers caused by certain bacteria in patients under one year of age and older. They work by killing bacteria which causes infection.

Ofloxacin drops are usually ophthalmic fluoroquinolone antibiotic which stops or prevents bacterial infections of eyeball by killing susceptible bacteria or inhibiting the growth.

Pharmacology of Ofloxacin:

Bioavailability of ofloxacin in tablet form is approximately 98% following oral administration that attains  maximum serum concentrations within one or two hours. 65% and 80% of an administered oral dose of ofloxacin is excreted as such via kidneys within 48 hours of dosing. Plasma elimination half life is approximately 4 to 5 hours in patients and approximately 6.4 to 7.4 hours in elderly patients.

Usage of ofloxacin drops:

  • For the use of Ofloxacin eye drops in the, first wash hands properly, tilt the head back. With index finger, lower eyelid is pulled away from the eyes to form a pouch. The medicine should be dropped into pouch and gently close the eyes. The excess of medication should be removed from eyes with clean, dry tissue. Donot touch eyes.
  • The applicator tip should not be touched to prevent germs to contaminate the medication.
  • Contact lenses should not be weared while using ofloxacin eye drops.
  • Ofloxacin drops works best when used at the same time each day.
  • For effective treatment to clear up the infection, the ofloxacin drops should be taken with full course treatment.
  • If ofloxacin drops are missed, it should be taken as soon as possible. If it is the time of next dose, the missed dose is skipped and go back to your regular dosing schedule.

The drops can show some side effects also:

Blurred vision, burning in eyes, redness, dry eyes, pain in eyes, and sensitivity to sunlight, tearing.

If any side effects occur, immediately seek medical help.

Storage of ofloxacin eye drops:

  • It should be stored in a cool, dry place, always away from direct heat and light.
  • The medications should be kept out of reach of children.

 Some contraindications ofofloxacin eye drops are:

  •  These eye drops are contraindicated to the pedriatric population, pregnancy, nursing mothers, and patients with psychiatric illness and in patients with epilepsy or other seizure diorders.
  • These drops are contraindicated in patients with liver disease. The excretion of ofloxacin may be reduced in patients with severe liver function disorders.
  • These eye drops are also contraindicated in pregnancy because ofloxacin is shown to have some teratogenic effects.
